PAC asks for report on Subansiri power project

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), has asked for a detailed report on the present status of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project from the Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami,
Aware of the present stalemate over the prestigious National Hydro Power Project, the PAC Chairman Murli Manohar Joshi told Goswami to submit his report to the committee as soon as possible.
Goswami on Sunday took over the responsibility as the new Union Home Secretary from his predecessor RK Singh.
PAC in its meeting held in the Parliament premises also discussed about the grave situation following flood in Assam. Representatives from different union ministries and PSUs were present in the meeting.
The PAC is a committee of selected members of parliament, for auditing of the expenditure of the Centre. It also discuss on public issues having big national importance.
Involvement of the PAC with the Subansiri project assumes significance as the work for the mega dam has been stopped since 2011, following a massive protest spearheaded by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) and All Assam Students Union (AASU).
Taking a note of the present deadlock, the parliamentary standing committee on home affairs has also asked the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER) to get involved with the project and take all necessary measures to resume the work.
Meanwhile, Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi said in New Delhi that his department has asked for some clarification from the Union Power Ministry over the Thattee Committee recommendations.
“We have asked for some more clarifications from the Union Power Ministry over the Thatte report…as soon as we get it we can resume the Subansiri work,” said Bordoloi.
