Panchayats: J&K Government favours West Bengal model

Favouring a West Bengal model in the working of grassroots units of governance in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has said that panchayats would be empowered to take up activities falling in their domain. Addressing a district board meeting here, he said, "the coalition government is firm on decentralisation of power for soliciting massive community participation in welfare programmes. Divisional Commissioners have already been made responsible for implementing these decisions." For ushering in real grassroots democracy and empowerment in the State, "panchayats from now on would supervise and monitor the functioning of schools, dispensaries and other important services.
