The state government has set up an inter-departmental co-ordination committee to monitor the revamp of the city’s centuries-old drainage system before the next monsoon, irrigation minister Manas Bhuniya said on Tuesday. As a first step, a smaller panel comprising representatives of the irrigation department, CMC, CEIP and the CMDA has prepared a status report after surveying the drainage system in Calcutta and areas under adjacent municipalities like Kamarhati, Panihati and North and South Dum Dum. In addition to members of the survey panel, the monitor panel includes urban development minister Firhad Hakim, environment minister Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar, the city mayor and senior officials. “It is clear that the drainage system needs to be revamped. But that requires huge funds and elaborate planning. We are working on an operative report,” said Bhuniya. The irrigation minister set up the survey committee in June following a prod by the chief minister. The 200-page report, titled “Report of High Level Committee for Improvement and Management of Drainage System of Calcutta” lists the reasons why Kestopur, Tolly’s Nullah, Beleghata and Bagjola canals get choked and cause waterlogging every year. “Unscientific disposal of plastic and medical wastes is one of the main reasons. More than 17 sacks of medical waste have been found in these canals,” said Bhuniya. The ministers of all the departments concerned will meet to discuss remedial measures after the festive season, said Bhuniya. “The departments need to work in harmony to revamp the tattered drainage system.” He added that finance and irrigation departments would bear the major portion of the project cost and the rest will be shared by the urban development and environment departments and the CMC.
