As the Iraq war entered its third week, the Centre put in place a team to assess its impact on the economy. The cell constituted on Monday evening by Planning Commission Deputy Chairman K C Pant comprises of Plan Panel secretary and principal advisors on energy, agriculture, tourism and perspective planning. The team drawn from within the commission, would monitor the war and evaluate its outcome on four major areas - inward remittances, oil prices, exports and tourism. The need for a war monitor was imperative at the juncture given signals of a prolonged conflict in the Gulf region. Based on how the war moves in coming days, the team would offer its feedback to the Centre.
