KOLKATA, 8 FEB: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation will allow parking for a maximum 180 cars on Park Street and the stretch on Jawaharlal Nehru Road opposite Oberoi Grand, the member, mayor-in-council in-charge of drainage, Rajib Deb, said today. The decision has been taken for faster movement of traffic along Park Street and opposite Oberoi Grand. The KMC has demarcated the area on both thoroughfares where parking ~ 100 vehicles opposite Oberoi Grand and 80 cars on Park Street ~ will be allowed and boards have been put up to this effect. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had asked the civic authorities and city police to ensure faster movement of vehicles through that section of the city. Mr Deb said that, in the past, since the area was not demarcated, people often parked their vehicles in double lines along the side of the road. This slowed traffic badly and created traffic jams. The KMC has put up signs on the two roads, specifying the number of vehicles allowed. A senior officer of the traffic department of the city police said traffic sergeants will book cars that break the parking rules. Mr Deb said demarcated parking will slowly be introduced throughout the city. In Burrabazar, there is a massive traffic jam every day, as trucks from all over the country converge on the wholesale market. The KMC is working on a parking policy, which will be introduced in the area shortly. Police are working on a parking policy for the city and it will be introduced soon. A senior police officer said parking on many important thoroughfares will not be allowed, to ensure smooth movement of traffic.
