A special task force set up to look into the issue of parking and traffic chaos in the city is looking at increasing parking charges and having separate rates for peak and non-peak hours. Delhi government sources said while a final decision on the parking charges is yet to be taken, the task force is mulling over the idea of hiking the parking charges for peak hours to Rs 50 for three hours and Rs 20 thereafter. During non-peak hours the charges would be Rs 30 for three hours during and Rs 10 thereafter.
“We have asked the MCD and NDMC to expedite the framing policy keeping these rates in mind. Also, residents living in commercial areas will be provided concession for their first car, but will have to pay commercial parking rates on their second car,’’ said an official.
There is also a proposal to make the challan for parking in unauthorised parking areas very steep in order to discourage people from keeping their vehicles in such areas.
“A committee has also been formed to look into ensuring proper lanes for non-motorised vehicles. The committee comprising urban planners, senior traffic officials and other experts will have to submit its report in a month’s time,’’ added the official.
