Parliamentary panel to review Green Visakha

Visakhapatnam: The industrial units and PSUs that are partners of Green Visakha Project were asked to shoulder trusted responsibility in making the Project a realistic and noble activity. Addressing the representatives of the industries, at the review meeting on implementation of the project, on Wednesday, Vuda vice-chairman as well as convener of the Green Visakha project monitoring committee Dr N. Yuvaraj said that the project should be considered as a responsible contribution by them. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests has recommended the Green Visakha Project, keeping the significance of the city of destiny as a global hub of activities in view, and to safeguarded it from the emerging dangers of pollution. Green Visakha Project has been derived as a five-year plan with a target of planting 40 lakh saplings with implementation of eight lakh plants a year, the vice-chairman said. Accordingly, areas were identified by Vuda to distribute them, among the participating industries, to take up massive plantation. Each industry has been assigned target of planting certain number of saplings. The vice-chairman directed the industries to complete the plantation, before the closing of rainy season, enabling the saplings to survive. The VPT, LG polymers, Brandix, Gangavaram Port, Naval Dock Yard, Andhra Petro Chemicals, Essar Steel, Synergies Casting are ahead in achieving targets of 2012-13 years up to 75 per cent where as HPCL, Hindustan Zinc, NALCO, East India Petroleum, Ramky are between 50- 75per cent achievement. For the year 2013-14, except RINL, Gangavaram port, Pearl Bottling and ENC, the remaining participating industries have to improve their performance, he observed. He said the Parliamentary Standing Committee will be visiting next month to observe the implementation of the project. Hence, the industries have to complete the targets by that time, he added. VUDA DFO, S Rammohan, forest range officer J Gansesh, horticulture officer, GV Lakshmi, social forestry DFO, Ravindra Nath, executive engineer of Pollution Control Board, Ravi Kumar and representatives of the participating industries were present.
