Peacock killing goes unchecked

Poaching of peafowl is going on unabated in the city and its surrounding areas for feathers and wildlife experts have even found nooses made of electrical wires to trap peafowl in the Narapalli forest block at Ghatkesar in the city outskirts. Unfortunately the state anti-poaching squad and wildlife officials do not have the chemical reagents to determine whether a peacock feather has been shed naturally or has been plucked from a dead or live peafowl. Experts point out that feathers that are plucked will have blood on the roots and chemical reagents like leucomlachite and phenophtaline and hydrogen peroxide can confirm the presence of blood which is not visible to the naked eye after washing. As per the existing Act, possession of naturally-shed feathers is not a crime. Ecologist Mr A. Ravi Kiran said,
