British ministers have drawn up plans to thwart future petrol blockades by pumping fuel around the country through military pipelines dating from World War II.During the recent fuel blockade, the government was within 24 hours of activating the Government Pipeline Storage System (GPSS) - built as part of the defence against a Nazi invasion - to refuel emergency vehicles.
