Pilot project in command areas of Malviya Nagar, Vasant Vihar and Nangloi The Planning Commission on Thursday gave thumbs up to Delhi Government’s move to involve private entities in supply of water in several areas of the city on the lines of power sector. The reform initiative in the water distribution sector has been complimented by Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia when Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit briefed him about the move. After years of dilly-dallying, Delhi Government last week finally approved a pilot project to involve private entities in distribution of water in command areas of Malviya Nagar, Vasant Vihar and Nangloi underground reservoirs and water treatment plants. 24-hour supply The government said the private entities would rationalise the water distribution network and ensure supply of water to the consumers round-the-clock. Officials said the reform in water sector has been initiated in consultation with the Planning Commission which had identified water sector reform as a priority area for the city. They said the private sector would be involved in water distribution, management and maintenance of DJB’s infrastructure in Malviya Nagar, Vasant Vihar and Nangloi and they will be paid a “fee” for their services. Ms. Dikshit had for quite sometime been indicating about reforms in water sector on the lines of reform in the power sector. Mapping water bodies Officials said Planning Commission has suggested mapping of all water bodies in Delhi to ensure their proper preservation and maintenance. They said the Commission asked the city government to reduce supply of non-revenue water and told it to promote rain water harvesting and ensure regulated exploration of ground water resources. - PTI
