Plea to prevent sewage, effluents from entering Palar

Palaru Pathukappu Vizhippunarvu Iyakkam (Palar Protection Awareness Movement-PPAM) has taken out a rally and conducted a public meeting demanding measures to prevent sewage, effluents of leather industry from entering Palar River in order to protect water sources, here on Sunday. Kanchi Amuthan of Palar Protection Joint Movement flagged off the rally from Arcot Road. The rally culminated at RTO Road, the venue of the public meeting. S.N.S. Marthandan, organiser, PPAM presided over the meeting. Songs on Palar State president of Thamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam S.A. Chinnasamy released an audio CD bearing songs on Palar, authored by Kalainesan and M. Mannar, brought out by the movement. M. Pushparani, a functionary of the movement received the first copy. Against privatisation At the meeting, resolutions were passed insisting the government give up the policy of privatising water, to take steps to claim 60 per cent of Palar water to Tamil Nadu and to close sand mining in order to protect water resources. Activists and functionaries from different civil society groups participated.
