Plutonium idea causing a stir

Plans by Kansai Power Electric Co. to use a plutonium-based fuel in its Takahama Nuclear Power Station may be delayed for a few years while the government-appointed Nuclear Safety Commission weighs the merits of the idea, officials said Tuesday. The Takahama plant is a conventional facility, unlike the Monju fast-breeder reactor also in Fukui Prefecture that used plutonium. The project came to a halt in 1995. The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan said it plans a strict review of the Takahama facility's operations because of fears about plutonium.
