Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to seek an estimated Rs 3,000 crore for rural connectivity under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) from the rural development ministry during the 2011-12 fiscal.
Briefing newsmen after attending a high-level review meeting on the status and progress of the PMGSY in the state, presided over by chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat here on Monday, chief secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik said that a detailed project proposal will be submitted to the rural development ministry soon to carry on the PMGSY.
He said that the state government has proposed to construct over 6,000 km of rural roads under the PMGSY during 2011-12 by availing Central grants.
Besides, it is targeted to provide connectivity to 869 Bharat Nirman Habitats under the scheme, he said.
During 2010-11, the state government was able to utilize a record 95 per cent of the Rs 1924.25-crore grants from the Centre under the PMGSY by constructing 1,486 km of roads.
The Centre had suspended the provision of funds under the PMGSY during 2010-11 due to the delay in sanctioning of the ADB assistance.
It is expected to release the funds to help implement the rural connectivity programme, he said.
The chief minister directed the state rural development authorities and the district collectors to expedite PMGSY implementation, particularly in the backward and Maoist-affected areas, where the Integrated Action Plan (IAP) is being in operation.
With the laxity in the guidelines under the PMGSY to provide connectivity to the villages with a population of 250 in the tribal areas, particularly in the tribal and Maoist-hit districts, 2206 more habitations in five Maoist-affected districts and 7444 more habitations under 10 districts where the IAP is being implemented would be covered this time, the chief secretary said.
