Polio drive to cover 2.30 lakh children

DINDIGUL: A total of 2.30 lakh children in the age group of 0-5 years will be immunised during the pulse polio programme to be held on December 21 and February 1. Twenty-five mobile medical centres will be set up to cover the children residing in remote and inaccessible areas, according to Collector R. Vasuki.
Addressing a consultative meeting held at the Collectorate here on Thursday, she said that elaborate arrangements have been made to administer polio drops to children at government headquarter hospitals, sub-centres, primary health centres, schools, noon meal centres, anganwadi centres, railway stations and bus stands.
A total of 1,232 centres in both urban and rural areas will be set up.
Besides, 25 mobile centres will also be deputed to cover children in hilly regions such as Pandrimalai, Thandigudi, Adalur, Sirumalai, Perumparai, Poolathur, Perumal Malai and upper Kodaikanal hill.
Over 5,343 persons, including government officials, staff in Anganwadi and ICDS centres, members of Rotary Clubs, students and volunteers from non-governmental organisations and youth from Nehru Yuva Kendra will be drafted for this work.
Instructions have been given to officials for intensive campaign on pulse polio programme.
Revenue officials will distribute pamphlets, organise awareness rallies, display banners and posters and depute field staff for door-to-door campaign to create awareness among people.
Ms. Vasuki appealed to all mothers to bring their children below five years to these centres to administer polio drops without fail.
The medical and para medical team, field staff and village health nurse will reach hilly areas well in advance to identify the children at remote villages, said R. Jegadeesh Kumar, Deputy Director of Health Services.

Besides manpower, 90 vehicles will be provided for this purpose, he added.
