42% oppose nuclear energy push : Forty-two percent of respondents to an Asahi Shimbun survey said they oppose the promotion of the use of nuclear power for electricity. The nationwide telephone poll, conducted on Friday and Saturday, followed last month's nuclear accident at the uranium-processing plant in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture. About 35 percent of the 1,025 people who responded said they supported the promotion of nuclear energy. Of those who expressed opposition, about 30 percent said they did so because of the Tokaimura accident .The results apparently reflect a growing distrust in the safety of nuclear energy since about half of the respondents said they had previously believed that serious accidents would not occur at the nation's nuclear facilities.
