Power demand comes down to five thousand megawatts

The demand for power has come down in the state with the arrival of rainy season. At present, the power demand stands at five thousand megawatts. One unit each of Amarkantak and Satpura have been closed down for annual maintenance in view of reduction in power demand. Power banking is also being undertaken with Punjab and Haryana keeping the ensuing rabi season and experiences of the last rabi season in mind.
With reduction in demand, power is now being supply for 24 hours at the divisional headquarters, 23 hours at the district headquarters, 20 hours at tehsil headquarters and 15 hours in the rural areas.
It may be mentioned that during the rabi season this year, a maximum of 8331 MW power was supplied against the demand of 8758 megawatts. The power demand had come down to seven thousand megawatts as soon the last rabi season came to an end on March 31.
This year 100 MW additional power was received from Torrent Power and 67.5 MW from NTPC's plants. At present, the availability of thermal power is 1930 MW against the demand of 2807 megawatts. Besides, 471 MW power is being received from the Board's hydel power plants against the demand of 917 MW, 560 MW from Indira Sagar against 1000 MW, 290 MW from Omkareshwar against 520 MW, 585 MW from Sardar Sarovar against 826.5 and 1650 megawatt power is being received from the Central units against the demand of 2355 megawatts.
In view of reduction in power demand, Unit No 3 of Amarkantak and Unit No. 5 of Satpura have been closed down for annual maintenance. Central area units have also been shut down for the same purpose. Besides, power is not being taken from Kawas gas-based power plant due to its being costly. Less power is also being drawn by the state from the national grid in view of reduced power demand.
