Power line brings out the French in farmers

Angry South Gippsland farmers and residents have warned the State Government that it faces a prolonged campaign of protests and blockades if it allows a proposed high-voltage overhead power line to pass through the region. A spokesman for the community group opposing the power line, which is part of the $350million Basslink proposal to link the Tasmanian and Victorian electricity systems, said many farmers were prepared to blockade city streets if necessary, even though the Basslink board has promised to look at all the environmental, social and community impacts of the project.
