The amount of coal burned at English and Welsh power stations has risen substantially since the end of March because of a cool summer and a shutdown of French nuclear power plants caused by a design fault. Figures from the electricity industry regulator showed power stations had burned 14.3m tonnes of coal by the first week of August, 22 per cent more than during the same period last year.
