"The major issues facing India today is the neglect of primary education and health care. It has not happened just today, but over the years and it has ended up in the poor not getting a fair chance. It is a question of overall priority of public policy and we need to do away with wasteful expenditure including large amounts we spend on military expenditure,'' said Nobel Laureate Prof. Amartya Sen. He was speaking at an interaction with the media at the close of a national seminar based on his book, 'Development as freedom - an Indian perspective' organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Shriram Centre for Industrial Research Centre and Human Resources (SRC) and co-sponsored by several other development organisations including The World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme.
