Congress MLA Rajesh Lilothia has demanded privatisation of the water supply system on the lines of power privatisation across the city, to bring efficiency in the supply mechanism. Speaking in the Delhi Assembly on Thursday, Lilothia demanded that the Delhi Government should privatise water supply system to improve the deficiency and leakage in the supply. Citing the example of the power privatisation model, the Congress MLA said that power supply has drastically improved after the privatisation of the distribution system. He said that private players should be involved in the supply system. This is not the first time that Lilothia has demanded privatisation of water supply system.
Replying to discussion, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit exhorted people to go for car pool to save fuel. Dikshit said that multi-pronged strategies are needed to fully control pollution in the capital city which has 65 lakh vehicles. The number of vehicles is much more than the number of total vehicles in other metro cities put together. Dikshit added that her Government is taking concrete steps to curb air pollution.
“For controlling air pollution in Delhi, air ambience fund has been created by imposing a fee of Rs 0.25 per litre of diesel sale in Delhi. An amount of Rs 30.56 crore was collected under air ambience fund in the financial year 2009-10. For promotion of vehicles operated with clean fuel, the Government is giving subsidy to battery operated vehicles from the air ambience fund,” Dikshit said.
