PMK leader S. Ramadoss on Friday criticised the Draft National Water Policy 2012, alleging that the policy will only fatten multi-national companies and destroy farming in the country.
In a statement here, he described as “highly condemnable,” the suggestion that water-related services be transferred to the community and /or private sector with an appropriate public private partnership model.
If water distribution was handed over to private parties, it would result in a danger of multi-national companies controlling water resources in the country.
“Already the government has allowed Pepsi and Coke to draw water at will. Now the Centre has decided to charge money for water from farmers. It will completely destroy agriculture in the country.”
Dr. Ramadoss said that while water resources and agriculture were covered under the general list, the direction of the Centre to the state governments not to distribute free electricity and water was against the principles of federalism. “After publishing the draft on the internet on January 31 the government has solicited views from the farmers. All farmers in the country do not have access to internet. So the government should hold public hearing on the issue,” he said.
