Widespread protests over the sharp rise in oil prices are provoking dismay and anger in the environmental movement. The public and politicians are accused of losing sight of the need to curb emissions of greenhouse gases. The issue has been thrown into sharp relief by gathering of international negotiators on climate change this week and next in Lyon, a city stricken by fuel shortages caused by blockades by truck drivers.
