Rare species of amphibians and reptiles are dying one after another in Jagadispur Lake, enlisted in the world wetlands area.
The animals have no way for life after the Western Irrigation Division Office, Kapilbastu, dried up the water in the lake citing for repair of the western outlet of the lake.
Meanwhile, the Jagadishpur Reservoir Multi-concerned Forum has expressed concern that the act of drying up the lake had destroyed bio diversity around the lake while the lake may be removed from the World list.
The Forum claimed that the preserved and rare species of the birds, tortoises, reptiles and fish are vanishing after the wetland region was dried. Locals have also begun fishing and catching other creatures in the drying lake, said Sundar Panday, a local.
However, Ramkrishna Ghorasaini, Engineer at the Division Irrigation Office, said the lake was constructed for irrigation purpose and that the preservation of the amphibians was not the priority.
"The main outlet of the lake has been in dilapidated condition and repairing it was a must," said Ghorasaini.
