Sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures are increasingly playing a key role in world trade. Developing countries are finding themselves confronted with problems arising from constantly changing standards in the developed world and poor flow of information. The standards formulated by the Codex Alimentarius Commission for specific food items are taken as the base. In case of disputes in global trade, though Codex standards are referred, the importing country reserves the right to fix their standards higher and more stringent than the Codex norms and reject imports provided they are scientifically justified.
