The Kollam Residents Apex Council has said that since the past six months drinking water supply is being denied to more than 200 families living on the northern side of the Taluk Office Junction-Iron Bridge along National Highway in the city.
The council said the area housed the abattoir of the Kollam City Corporation and waste from the abattoir had allegedly polluted the drinking water wells there making the water unfit for consumption.
In the wake of the situation, the residents depended on the supply from the Kerala Water Authority.
It was this water supply which remained suspended since the last six months.
The residents had on several occasions petitioned the authorities concerned but there was no response, a statement in this connection from the council alleged. Even though the issue came up before the mass contact programme of the Chief Minister here and directions were issued to rectify the problem, no steps had been taken.
Lack of funds was being cited as the cause for the delay in reviving water supply.
A meeting of the residents' council held on Monday wanted the authorities to source the expense from any of the emergency relief funds.
Council says drinking water supply has been denied to more than 200 families for the last six months.
