A court ordered the national government and the Metropolitan Expressway Public Corp. to pay 149 million yen in compensation to 48 residents in Kawasaki who complained that air pollution from busy roads was destroying their health. The judgment by the Kawasaki Branch of the Yokohama District Court is the first ruling in Japan that clearly states that nitrogen dioxide and particulates of heavy metals from automobiles cause health problems.
