Role of individual toilets in promoting sanitation stressed

As part of a programme being implemented by the Aruvankadu-based non governmental organisation, the Rural Development Organisation (RDO), to enhance awareness about the benefits of individual toilets among people in the rural parts of The Nilgiris district, a book titled ‘A Revolution in Sanitation in The Nilgiris’ was released here on Monday. Participating as the chief guest, Marie Larose, director, Recruitment and Awards, York University, Canada, released the book. G.V.Shankar, advisor to the Government of Saskatoon, Canada, said that in the ongoing efforts to raise the standard of hygiene and sanitation particularly in the rural areas the possibility of adopting Canadian technology could be explored. Vijay Athreye, advisor, Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation and Health (FINISH), said that a study had revealed that India accounted for as much as 60 per cent of the open defecation in the world. Around 15 crore toilets would be needed to tackle the problem, he said and added that the individual toilet scheme now under implementation by FINISH was sustainable. The growing demand for water and the population related problems of the country would not reduce its efficacy. K.Gopal, chairman, Nilgiris Sanitation Task Force Committee, said that open defecation was a source of concern in the district. RDO director N.K.Perumal, who presided, said that the book featured various details pertaining to the scheme. Representatives of some of the panchayats and members of the Toda tribal community were present.
