Rs 12.68 crore to self-help groups under District Poverty Initiative Project

Bhopal, Jan 4: So far Rs 12 crore 68 lakh has been given as livelihood to 5 thousand 747 self-help groups in 14 backward districts of the state where the second phase of District Poverty Initiative Project (DPIP) is being implemented during the year 2010-11. Under the project, 10 thousand 694 self-help groups (SHGs) have been formed.
In November last year, 508 youths were imparted training for skill development. Job officers were given to 3 thousand 842 unemployed candidates through three Job Fairs. Skill development training has been imparted to 3 thousand 500 youths so far this year while job offers have been given to 25 thousand 964 candidates through 60 Job Fairs.
It may be mentioned that this World Bank-funded project is being implemented in Damoh, Chhatarpur, Guna, Narsingarh, Panna, Rewa, Sagar, Rajgarh, Raisen, Sidhi, Shivpuri, Shajapur, Tikamgarh and Vidisha district. The objective of the project is economic and social uplift of the poor through self-help groups. The project covers four thousand 894 villages of 53 development blocks.
The second phase of DPIP was implemented with effect from October 2009. In the previous year, 5 thousand 262 self-help groups were formed while Rs 3 crore 8 lakh was distributed as livelihood assistance to 2 thousand 646 SHGs. Under the project, 1885 persons were imparted training in various institutions while 518 of them underwent training in hotel management. Besides, job offers were given to 9 thousand 572 persons through 30 Job Fairs.
In the first phase of DPIP, which was started in the year 2000, a total of 56 thousand 89 SHGs were constituted and Rs 411 was distributed among 3 lakh 26 thousand beneficiaries.
