Rs. 3.75-crore works to be taken up in Virudhunagar

In places adjoining Western Ghats VIRUDHUNAGAR: An estimate to take up several works at a cost of Rs. 3.75 crore under the Western Ghats Development Programme in Virudhunagar district has been sent for government approval. Addressing a meeting to review the progress of the programme here on Wednesday, Collector K. Raghupathi advised officials to execute works after consulting the people and getting the ratification of the respective village panchayats. The scheme is being implemented in Rajapalayam, Srivilliputtur and Sattur divisions. In 2007-08, several works to the tune of Rs. 2.08 crore were taken up and the target for 2008-09 was fixed at Rs. 2.16 crore. This year, it has been planned to take up works to the tune of Rs. 3.75 crore. The Collector urged the officials to expedite the execution of pending works. Tourist spots Mr. Raghupathi said that facilities available for tourists at Ayyanar Falls, Sasthakoil and Pilavakkal dam would soon be augmented in association with the Department of Tourism. Road facility would be improved and parks created in these places. Basic amenities for residents of beneficiary villages would also be improved under the programme and student hostels renovated through the Department of Adi Dravidar Welfare, according to an official press release.
