The power sector in the Capital, which witnessed frequent outages last month, received a much-needed boost from the Union Budget, which allotted Rs.200 crore to augment infrastructure in the key Department.
In his Budget speech, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley categorically mentioned that transmission-related problems were a huge challenge for the power sector in Delhi.
“In order to overcome this and make Delhi a world class city, I propose to provide Rs.200 crore for power reforms,” he said.
People in several areas here had a harrowing time for almost three weeks after a storm on May 30 damaged the transmission network. The lines could not cope with the sudden storm, which led to frequent and prolonged power outages, despite the city having surplus power.
A Delhi Government official said the Central grant will help improve the ailing transmission network.
Sources in the Power Department said the Delhi Transco Limited has about 10 pending projects.
