The Union Government has decided to hold a major review of the impact of all ongoing rural development programmes in the country. A two-day national conference of Rural Development Ministers of all States and Union Territories will be organised for the purpose on January 27-28. Sources in the Rural Development Ministry said the national conference would be inaugurated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who would also launch on the occasion a new scheme, called "Haryali", for the development of wasteland in the country. This is the first time in the recent past when a conference of State Rural Development Ministers is being organised to review the impact of all ongoing rural development programmes.
