Gerhard Schroder, the German chancellor, intervened personally in a potentially damaging dispute over his government's plan for withdrawing from nuclear power. After talks at the chancellory with the heads of four of the country's big energy companies, Mr Schroder said both sides agreed that an exit from nuclear power needed to be reached by consensus. He said the government would respect questions of ownership and address claims for damages.
