German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reaffirmed his government's intention to end the use of nuclear power in Germany even as the conservative opposition pledged new moves to block the phaseout. Schroeder has given power companies until the summer to negotiate a schedule to shut down Germany's 19 nuclear power plants.
