US scientists have produced laboratory mice in which as much as a quarter of the brain cells are human. The development could carry promise for treating disease but poses questions about the boundaries between people and animals. The "chimaeric brain" experiment-was carried out in California by Irving Weissman of Stanford University with colleagues from the Salk Institute and StemCells Inc, a biotechnology company.
