Second hand smoke causes blood vessels in animals to constrict abnormally and the effect is seen within minutes, researchers said. A University of California San Francisco study examined 96 rabbits and exposed some of them to second hand smoke for time periods ranging from 30 minutes to six hours. Researchers found an abnormal constriction of the aorta in rabbits exposed to smoke for only half-an-hour.
