Hauz Khas Village is staring at a possible shutdown for gross violations by eateries and commercial establishments in the area. The Delhi high court on Monday fast-tracked the hearing into PILs highlighting several violations in the area, observing that if there is a terror attack even security agencies can't enter the spot on time. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar indicated that it will start examining on a day-to-day basis the host of illegalities going on in the zone, which is a favourite haunt of food lovers. The bench firmed up its mind after Delhi Jal Board informed it that sewerage in the area is "choked and overloaded" due to so many eateries springing up in the area whose system was designed chiefly for domestic use. The bench also directed DJB to inform it about the source of water for the eateries at the village and and also the number of bore-wells in that area and fixed the matter for hearing on September 26. HC then said it will investigate each violation and frame issues so that proper directions can be given to rectify the problem. The court will deal with the narrow entry and exit points, some eateries encroaching upon ASI protected monuments or using illegal boring to extract water. The court said it will further examine if the eateries are contributing to any source of air/water/noise pollution, saying all agencies must be held answerable. It observed that people doing business "deserve to make profit, but not at the cost of public life" underlining that "if restaurants have to run, they have to comply with the law". "Delhi is in a mess. We have cases where residential places have been converted into coaching institutes. Increase in population have led to increase in crime. Instead of going out of the city, we are coming inside," the bench remarked. HC's order came while hearing PILs filed by activist Pankaj Sharma and advocate Anuja Kapur alleging there were over 120 restaurants and pubs running in the Hauz Khas Village of south Delhi without any approved building plans or NOCs from the authorities, including the fire department.
