The World Country Manager in Sierra Leone Parminder Brar has announced a $44.3 million for Sierra Leone.Brar said $30 million will go to budget support while $14 million is for the Bank’s cash transfer project targeting extremely poor people, under the Social Safety Net project. He said this will extend the life span of the project aimed at alleviating extreme poverty in the country. The programme will now last until 2019, he said. Last week the National Commission for Social Action, the government agency which implements the cash transfer programme, announced the competition of the last transfer in the current programme. The next transfer in this second phase is expected to commence on December 28 after parliamentary approval, said Brar. The money is often handed over to female headed families as women are considered the most vulnerable. This way the beneficiaries are expected to be 99 percent women, according to Brar. “This is critical time for the government of Sierra Leone in term of economic growth, there has been a drop in revenue, and a minus 21 percent drop in growth. It is difficult scenario for government to deal with. â€ he said.
