The ill-planned development of Silchar town in Assam, uneven sectoral growth of population, boom in highrise buildings, mushrooming hotels and nursing homes, acute load-shedding and illegal connections have all contributed to the continuing potable water crisis in Silchar. In view of the rise in population which is projected to become 2.04 lakh by 2011, the PHE division I submitted a new scheme of Rs 5.34 crore with 10 MLD capacity under non-lapsable Central pool and resources to DONER.
