India' s policy makers may derive some satisfaction from the fact that it has improved its rank on the basis of the UNDP's human development index by 13 notches in one year, and that it is one of 11 countries that are on track to halve poverty levels by 2015 - compared to 70 others that are not. But UNDP's latest Human Development Report (2201) also contains enough evidence to show that India's achievement are by no means exceptional. It is 55th in the list of 90 developing countries ranked according to the main human poverty index used in the report....(Editorial)
