A single ticketing system will soon be introduced in the country which will ensure that people can travel in buses, trains, metros and ferries across India using a single card. This card can also be used for paying parking and toll fees. This national common mobility card (NCMC), named ‘More’, was unveiled by Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath on Tuesday.
However, it would take five years before the card becomes operational throughout the country, said a ministry official.
Nath described the card as a means for seamless connectivity across multiple modes of transportation, while speaking at the Urban Mobility India 2011.
“It will increase the popularity and acceptability of public transport nationally and make public transport more appealing to the end user,” he said.
The Centre will spearhead a national programme of inter-operable automated fare collection system (AFCS) for the purpose.
The ministry will try to push for installation of parking metres in all metro cities, added ministry officials. The implementation of ‘More’ will be partly funded by the Central government under the JNNURM scheme covering the buses sanctioned under it.
So far, an agreement has been signed with the Jaipur City Transport Services Limited and the card will be operational in buses across Rajasthan’s state capital by March 2012. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and Bhopal Municipal Corporation are also at an advance stage of entering into an agreement. In Mumbai, to begin with, these cards may be issued to those having monthly passes.
The card is set to make its debut in Delhi with the Phase III of the Delhi Metro network. Ministry officials said that in the beginning, both NCMC and metro cards will be allowed to be used.
