THE Samuga Samathuva Padai (SSP) led by former bureaucrat P Sivakami will petition Gover nor Surjit Singh Barnala to get the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) areas in Tamil Nadu to be declared as scheduled areas, which would bestow special protection to the tribals. According to a 1986 data, about 3,630 acres of tribal land had been sold to non-tribals in regions including Dharmapuri, Nilgiris and Salem. The notification of ITDP areas as scheduled would prevent fur ther transfer of tribal lands to non-tribes besides aiding the retrieval of tribal lands. Speaking to reporters on Thursday here, Sivakami said Constitutional provisions (Article 244 (1), and Schedule V) provided for declaration of regions as scheduled areas if it had a significant population of tribal people.
