The Centre told the Supreme Court that it was taking all necessary measures to protect biodiversity in the country in the wake of the patenting of "basmati rice" by a firm in the US. Making a statement before a division bench comprising which resumed hearing on a public interest petition in the "basmati rice" patent case, the Attonery General, Soli J Sorabjee, said laws dealing with biological diversity were "under formulation" to fulfil obligaitons under the convention on biological diversity.
