A massive street theatre campaign on health issues in Dharamapuri, one of the most backward districts in Tamil Nadu, has resulted in an impressive increase in the demand for healthcare in the area. At the end of about 3,000 plays under the campaign, called "kalaipayanam" staged in all blocks of the district, the outpatient attendance at the primary health centres (PHCs) has increased substantially.
