Bhubaneswar: With many power producers including Nalco facing coal crisis, the Odisha government on Monday asked Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd (CIL), to submit periodic reports to it on the volume of coal being supplied to different units within the state.
The state government's instruction to MCL was given by chief secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik who chaired a coordination meeting between coal supplier and power producers here.
MCL has assured that it is in the process of streamlining coal supply to different power producing units including thermal power plants, independent power producers (IPPs) and captive power plants set up by many industries including Nalco, energy secretary G Mathivathanan told reporters here.
Quoting MCL's assurance to the state government, the energy secretary said the coal crisis would soon be over as difficulties faced by the PSU were being sorted out.
MCL is asked to give priority in coal supply to power generating units within the state, a senior official said.
Meanwhile, the state government set up a group, to be coordinated by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), to study implementation of the mining plan and effective mining operation by the MCL, official sources said.
MCL was also asked to completely exhaust certain coal mines so that mine voids could be filled by fly ash produced by different thermal power plants, a senior member of the OSPCB said.
MCL, in the meanwhile, has offered four of its completely used coal mines, for filling up by NTPC and Nalco.
It will require about 20 years to fill up pits created by MCL, an NTPC official said.
The company was also told to construct a 6-lane road from Sundargarh to Basundhara coal mines area via Kodeka, used by it for transportation of coal to different plants.
MCL, on its part, assured the state government that the PSU had decided to give 10 per cent of its transport contract to local people if they operate through cooperative mode.
