There is such a lot of sulphur in the oil and gas reserves of the vast former Soviet republic that oilmen fear finding a solution would be very difficult. The environmental issues surrounding development of the northern Caspian have assumed a greater importance following the signing of production sharing contracts for Kazakhstan's Karachaganak onshore gas condensate field sector of the northern Caspian Sea.
