Scientists have succeeded in mapping the genetic make-up of the bacterium that causes syphilis. The information could be critical for developing new vaccines anddrugs against the disease. Molecular geneticist Claire Fraser from The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Maryland, who worked on the microbe, said the syphilis bacterium, Treponema pallidum, was a simple but baffling organism.
