Taiwan halts construction of 4th nuclear power plant

Acting on the most divisive issue of his presidency, Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan halted construction on a nuclear power plant that had been championed by the country's former leaders. Prime Minister Chang Chun-hsiung, who announced the decision, said building a fourth nuclear power plant in Taiwan was unnecessary and would create unacceptable environmental and safety hazards.
