Tardy progress

The UNDP's Human Development Report 2005, which has ranked India 127th among 177 countries on the human development index (HDI), should serve as a harsh reminder that the country has a long way to go. Indeed, there is reason for concern, for, despite the strides made by India in terms of economic growth, this growth has failed to impact poverty levels, reduce child and infant and maternal mortality levels, education and gender inequalities. Put bluntly, India has miles to go. The report's findings should serve as a warning to governments, both at the central and state level, policymakers, politicians, those working in the development sector and indeed any concerned Indian: that a lot needs to be done if the country is to show any improvement in its social indicators.
