Inspection by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board’s Advisory Committee for Project Safety Review (ACPSR) of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project 1 and 2 continued for the second day on Thursday during which the team members keenly reviewed the additional safety measures incorporated in the ready-to-be commissioned reactor in the post-Fukushima scenario.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), which had decided to incorporate a few more safety arrangements in its nuclear reactors in the post-Fukushima scenario as a “voluntary commitment”, in addition to the existing protective measures, has so far integrated six additional safety features apart from “other futuristic safety measures” in its first two 1,000 MWe VVER-type reactors being built with Russian assistance on an outlay of over Rs. 17,000 crore.
As enriched uranium fuel loading in the first reactor has been completed, the ACPSR members, led by its chairman S.K. Mehta, formerly director, Babha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, are now examining the performance of the reactor’s sub-systems and other related parameters.
Moreover, they are also reviewing the six additional safety measures incorporated in the ‘Third Generation Plus Reactor’ after the Fukushima incidents.
“Based on its observations, the ACPSR will submit its report to the AERB soon,” said highly placed NPCIL sources.
