Of all the rivers in India today, only Brahmaputra is in surplus, and will cease to be if the Three Gorges dams get underway upstream, in China. These are just some of the stats that Intach's water specialist Manu Bhatnagar jolts people with - into thinking seriously about the precious resource. Yet, there is also an acute shortage of good quality water supply in practically all Indian cities--and the levels of availability in rural setups too isn't up to the mark. However, the good news is that many states have acknowledged the problem--and have actively started addressing the issue with grassroot participation. Take Madhya Pradesh, for instance. The state offers a six per cent rebate on property tax for a year if incorporates water harvesting techniques in the building.
